The running cost nobody quotes
Every AI chatbot answer costs a fraction of a cent to a few cents in model usage. At a few hundred conversations a month that is small — commonly $5–50/month — but it is not zero and it scales with traffic rather than with your revenue.
On a subscription this is buried inside the monthly fee, which is a real convenience, and it is also why per-resolution pricing exists and why a busy month costs more. On a build you hold the provider account and pay usage directly, which is cheaper and more transparent but means the bill is yours to watch. A flat CAD price is quoted after a short scoping conversation, because a quote given before anyone knows how many scenarios exist is a guess dressed as a price.
Where chatbots waste money
Two patterns, both common. The first is buying a chatbot when the traffic is not there — a site with forty visitors a month does not have a conversion problem a chatbot can fix, it has a traffic problem, and the money is better spent elsewhere. The second is a bot with no honest fallback: when it cannot answer, it must offer a real next step — a phone number, a form, a human — rather than looping. A gap in the bot's knowledge should cost a slower reply, not the lead.
