What to do when AI gives wrong information about your business
Save the inaccurate answer and check which sources it cites. Correct the information you control, request corrections from other publishers when appropriate, and submit feedback through the platform. Keep a dated record so you can distinguish a corrected source from an answer that still repeats old information.
How it works
- 1
Record the exact question, date, platform and inaccurate statement.
- 2
Check cited pages and compare them with your current business details.
- 3
Correct your website and owned listings; request other publishers' corrections.
- 4
Submit platform feedback with concise evidence where supported.
- 5
Recheck and record the outcome without assuming an immediate update.
Describe one error precisely
Write down the specific claim and the correct fact. 'The answer lists a service we do not provide' is easier to investigate than 'AI is wrong about us'. Save enough context to reproduce the observation, including the question and cited URL.
Separate factual errors from opinions or an unfavourable comparison. If a business name is shared by several companies, check whether the answer has mixed up locations or identities before changing your own site.
Start with the source you can verify
Open the cited page and read what it actually says. Your current website might still contain an old footer, an outdated service page or conflicting opening information. Correct all relevant copies, including structured information where it repeats the same fact.
If another publisher is wrong, use that publisher's correction process. Give the page address, the exact error and a public source supporting the correction. Avoid sending private customer records as proof.
Use platform feedback as a separate step
Google provides feedback controls for AI Overviews. Follow the current interface and explain the error with relevant evidence. Fixing a source and reporting an answer are separate actions; the same answer may not change immediately.
Other assistants have their own feedback options. Record which route you used and whether a response was received. No correction request should be presented to you as a guaranteed deletion of every future answer.
Keep customers informed on your own website
Make the correct information easy to find on the relevant service or contact page. If you no longer offer a service, say what current visitors can request instead. If you serve an area rather than operating a public storefront, describe that accurately.
Avoid writing a long defensive page that repeats the false claim more prominently than the truth. The useful outcome is a clear current answer for customers and a consistent source for systems that retrieve the page.
Maintain a correction log
For each issue, record the observation date, the incorrect fact, the source URL, the action taken and the next check. Mark source corrections and observed answer corrections separately. Keep screenshots private if they contain personal information.
An accuracy review can identify inconsistencies and prepare a correction plan. It cannot control another publisher's response or promise that all models stop repeating an error on a particular date.
Common questions
Can you force an AI company to remove an answer?
No. We can help document the issue, correct information you control and identify the available reporting routes. The platform decides how it responds.
What if the answer has no citations?
Save the question and answer, check your public business details for possible confusion, and use the platform's feedback options. Do not invent a source for the error.
Should I change my business name to avoid confusion?
Do not make a major identity change based on one answer. First check whether your existing name, location and service details are consistently represented.
